Landscapers maintain landscape and irrigation at Emerald Downs Race Track. Responsible for the cultivation and care of the landscaping and grounds surrounding a business or building. Plants flowers, mows, pulls weeds, repairs structures, and maintains outside of building. This also includes the wetlands and other locations on the premises.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Perform grounds keeping and building maintenance duties.
Mow lawn either by hand or using a riding lawnmower.
Cut lawn using hand, power or riding mower and trim and edge around walks, flower beds, and walls.
Landscape by planting flowers, grass, shrubs, and bushes.
Apply pesticide to rid grounds of pests such as mosquitos, wasps, ticks, and others.
Apply fertilizer to ground to enhance growth.
Shovel snow from walkways and sprinkle ice down to keep people from falling.
Perform routine maintenance duties such as applying plaster, fixing fountains, and other duties.
Sweep walkway of debris.
Cut down tree limbs that are posing a danger.
Trim shrubs and pull weeds.
Perform minor repairs and maintenance procedures on equipment utilized in grounds keeping.
Install lawn furniture.
Rake, mulch, and prune the grounds as needed.
Install rock, cement, lighting, water, and furniture.
Water plants and grass as needed and apply fertilizer.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Must be knowledgeable in all facets of irrigation systems. Able to run all types of heavy equipment/power tools. The ability to maintain a well-organized crew. Able to run a spray program: herbicide, pesticides, maintain “pesticide records book.” The ability to operate landscaping equipment and tools as well as knowledgeable about equipment safety procedures.
Age 18 or over due to equipment safety regulations.
Valid driver’s license
Work Environment, Communication & Physical Abilities:
Mostly relaxed work pace. Detail oriented work. Communication with all staff, supervisors, and guests must be done with courtesy and respect. Grounds maintenance work is done outdoors in all kinds of weather. The work can be repetitive and physically demanding, requiring frequent bending, lifting, and shoveling. Grounds maintenance workers have a rate of injuries and illnesses that is higher than the national average. Workers who use dangerous equipment, such as lawnmowers and chain saws, must wear protective clothing, eyewear, and earplugs. Those who apply chemicals such as pesticides or fertilizers must wear protective gear, including appropriate clothing, gloves, goggles, and sometimes respirators.
Tools & Equipment:
Landscaping vehicles and equipment/tools such as: chainsaws, trimmers/cutters, blowers, shredders, edgers, sprayers, pruners, hand tools, multi-task tools, and protective gear.
